Seven records fell in the North Whidbey Aquatic Club’s fifth annual junior/senior triathlon Friday, Aug. 24.
Two other records were set in the gold triathlon for younger competitors Thursday, Aug. 23.
In the junior/senior event, Laura Rosen smashed her own girls course record by 56 seconds by clocking a 52:57 while swimming 1,600 meters, biking four miles and running two miles. Her times of 19:10 (swim), 18:33 (bike) and 15:14 (run) included swim and bike records and helped her place fifth overall out of nine boys and 13 girls.
Brett Vagt set a boys course mark of 49:02 with splits of 19:14, 16:49 (record) and 12:59, breaking Evan Wilson’s 2010 course record by five seconds.
In all, records were set in five of the six components. In addition to Rosen and Vagt’s marks, Jeron Kosbar set a boys running record (11:46), obliterating the old mark by 1:22; and Lauren Vagt reset her own girls running record, dropping it to 13:32 from 14:05.
The only component record not broken was Wilson’s 2010 swim record of 18:23.
Lauren Vagt finished second among the girls (55:17) and sixth overall.
The top five finishers all surpassed the winning time of the first triathlon in 2008, and eight girls topped the fastest female time of 2008.
Following Brett Vagt in the overall finish were Josh Jepsen (51:29), Cole Weinstein (51:31) and Kosbar (52:03).
On the girls side, after Rosen and Lauren Vagt were Kelly Huffer (55:44, seventh overall), Molly Vagt (55:53, eighth) and Ciara Hu (58:42, 11th).
In the gold triathlon, Sydney Dickinson won (39:03) while setting a new running record (9:27) on the course which included a 1,000-meter swim, 2.4-mile ride and 1.2-mile run.
Bruce Vagt finished second overall and first among the boys (40:12), and Mary Catherine Middleton placed third (40:19) while setting a new bike record (14:30).
Sam Hines was fourth (42:02) and Sophie Dickinson fifth (42:33) out of 10 competitors.
