Nasty weather didn’t stop the Oak Harbor High School boys golf team from its best effort in recent years at the Tom Dolan Memorial Invitational Monday, April 13, at the Everett Golf and Country Club.
Because of the weather, the tournament was halted when players were on their 11th or 12th hole. Scores were determined by the first nine holes each player completed regardless of where he started. The best four scores of the five players for each team were recorded.
Oak Harbor placed eighth out of 24 teams with a score of 31 strokes over par. Snohomish won with a plus-11.
Steven Timm paced Oak Harbor with a plus-4, good for ninth out of 115 golfers.
“Steven did really well,” coach David Smith said. “Even when the weather got really bad, he was still grinding out pars and even a couple birdies. I was really impressed with how he played today.
“Mason (Dieter) did well also. He had a couple bad holes but other than those he played really well.”
Dieter finished at plus-6, good for 26th. Raiden Poe shot plus-7, Ben Fikse plus-10 and Aaron Kelley plus-13.
“Really impressed with the whole group,” Smith said. “The weather was bad — puddles on the greens. It was windy and cold, and all kept playing and played well on a hard course. This is the best result in the Dolan for Oak Harbor since I stated coaching three years ago.”
Next up for Oak Harbor is the beginning of league play.
The six Wesco North 3A teams meet at Stanwood’s Kayak Point Golf Course at 3 p.m. Tuesday, April 14.
Each North school will host a conference match; Oak Harbor’s turn is 2 p.m. Tuesday, April 21.
