The Oak Harbor High School swim team’s perfect season took a hit — twice — Friday, Jan. 29, as the Wildcats fell to host Kamiak and Marysville-Pilchuck in a double-dual meet.

The three schools headed into Friday’s meet, the final contest of the regular season, with the only perfect records in the Western Conference. Kamiak came out on top.

The Knights, the Wesco South champions, defeated Oak Harbor 131-52 and Marysville-Pilchuck 118-68.

The big meet, however, was between M-P and Oak Harbor. The Tomahawks defeated Oak Harbor 112-71 to capture the Wesco North title. This was the second consecutive year Marysville edged Oak Harbor for the division championship.

Oak Harbor coach Amy Nurvic said her team members knew they would have to swin personal bests to compete with Kamiak and M-P. That didn’t happen, but the Wildcats did get several strong performances.

Price Hu was first in both meets in the 100-yard butterfly with a state-qualifying time of 54.96.

The 200 medley relay team of Jacob Jepsen, Yale Rosen, Brandon Vagt and Matt Bolte finished second to both opponents but earned a state time of 1:44.48.

Josh Jepsen placed first against Marysville-Pilchuck in the 500 free (5:10.29), while his brother Jacob Jepsen took the 100 backstroke (57.44) over Kamiak.

The 400 freestyle relay team of Devin Schell, the Jepsens and Hu defeated Marysville in 3:36.

The Wildcats picked up seconds in both meets from Rosen in the 100 breaststroke (1:05.33) and from the 200 free relay team of Bolte, Rosen, Josh Jepsen and Hu (1:36.08).

Nurvic said Oak Harbor gave up 13 points in each meet because it did not field any divers.

Nurvic also said it is tough for her team to compete against schools like Kamiak and Marysville-Pilchuck who have their own pools. Those schools have access to their entire pools at any time for any length of time necessary.

Oak Harbor High School has to share a community pool and is given two lanes for 90 minutes each day for practice.

Next up for the Wildcats is the district meet at Kamiak. Preliminaries are Thursday, Feb. 11, and the finals Saturday, Feb. 13.

Other Oak Harbor swimmers who earned top-six times against Kamiak and M-P are as follows:

200 free: 6. Josh Jepsen, 1:57.83.

200 IM: 4. Hu, 2:05.59; 5. Jacob Jepsen, 2:06.68.
