People with view homes on the Southwest end of Whidbey Island saw an unusual sight this morning: a submarine being escorted or pushed by tugboats. Photographer David Welton said this location is just north of the Kingston ferry dock, and the picture was taken about 8:30 a.m. Steam appears to be emanating from the submarine. “It’s an Ohio Class submarine, it’s not in distress, it’s not disabled,” said Lt. Ed Early, pubic information officer for Submarine Group 9 at Bangor. Other information was not immediately forthcoming. “I can’t comment until its current operations are completed,” he told the Whidbey News-Times.
