After splitting a pair of 2-1 matches over the weekend, the Coupeville soccer team now prepares for the district playoffs.

The Wolves (7-7, 9-7) welcome Meridian (4-11) in a loser-out match at 5 p.m. Wednesday, May 2, at Mickey Clark Field.

The winner will be District 1’s No. 3 seed in the tri-district tournament and will play District 2 No. 2 at 6 p.m. Saturday, May 5, at Sammamish High School in a loser-out match.

Friday, April 27, Coupeville lost 2-1 at Lakewood, then bounced back to defeat visiting Granite Falls 2-1 in overtime Saturday to wrap up the regular season.

Against Lakewood, Josh Wilsey helped the Wolves come back to even the score at 1 with a 25-yard goal in the 54th minute.

The Cougars (6-8, 7-8) pulled out the win by scoring in the 74th minute.

Coach Paul Mendes said, “The game was a tight one with good chances by both teams right to the final minute.”

It took overtime, but the Wolves pulled out a 2-1 win over upset-minded Granite Falls (1-12, 2-13).

Neither team could reach the net until Coupeville’s Nathan Lamb scored in the 72nd minute from 12 yards out in a scramble in front of the goal mouth.

With just two minutes left in regulation, Granite Falls scored on a 20-yard free kick that was deflected, making it “impossible to save” for keeper Kole Kellison, according to Mendes.

Coupeville collected the game winner four minutes into overtime on a counter attack with quick passing that helped spring free Dylan Tack up the right sideline. He beat two defenders and delivered a long cross to Brent Arnold who headed in the goal from close range.

Mendes said Kellison made “some key saves to secure the win.”

The Wolves outshot the Tigers 29-11 and hit the post once and the crossbar twice.

Mendes said, “Our passing-possession game was below par, which led to a scrappy battle of a game — perhaps from fatigue of playing a game the night before and four in the same week…It all ended on a high note with a great goal in OT.”
