Coupeville and Oak Harbor high school winter athletes are gearing up for the second season.
The Oak Harbor boys wrestling team, along with the rest of the Wesco North and Ferndale of the Northwest Conference, opens the post season with the subregional at Stanwood High School at 5 p.m. Friday, Feb. 1, and 11 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 2. The top three in each weight class advance to the regional at Marysville-Pilchuck Saturday, Feb. 9.
The girls subregional wrestling meet starts at 5 p.m. Friday, Feb. 1, at Squalicum High School in Bellingham, and then moves to Bellingham High School Saturday beginning at 10 a.m.
In basketball, both Oak Harbor and Coupeville will participate in eight-team, double elimination formats. The top three teams from the Oak Harbor boys and Coupeville girls tournaments move on. The first four in the Coupeville boys district group advance.
The Coupeville girls (6-13) start at 7 p.m. Monday, Feb. 4, at fourth-ranked and No. 1 seed Lynden Christian (16-3).
The No. 8 seed Wolves will play opposite No. 5 South Whidbey (10-10) and No. 4 Nooksack Valley (12-7). The winners and losers will pair up in the second round Wednesday, Feb. 6, at the site of the higher seed.
The No. 8 Coupeville boys (1-18) will also open at defending state champion and third-ranked Lynden Christian (15-4) at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 5. Coupeville is opposite No. 5 South Whidbey (4-16) and the No. 4 seed, a Northwest Conference team that has yet to be decided. Round two is Thursday, Feb. 7.
The North No. 2 Oak Harbor boys (11-9) start the postseason at home at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 6, against South No. 3 and 10th-ranked Shorewood (14-6).
South No. 1 Mountlake Terrace and North No. 4 Marysville Getchell are opposite Oak Harbor/Shorewood in the brackets. The winners and losers face off Saturday, Feb. 9. The losers play at 7 p.m. at the site of the higher seed; the winners meet in the semifinals at 6 p.m. at Jackson High School.
The Oak Harbor swim team joins the nine other Wesco 3A teams and Ferndale at the district meet at Marysville-Pilchuck at 5 p.m. Friday, Feb. 8, and 4 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 9. The top three in each event, plus those who earn state-qualifying times, advance to the state meet.
