A lunchroom lady at Coupeville High School is accused of stealing a wad of cash from a coworker’s purse, court documents indicate.
Prosecutors charged 39-year-old Iris Plyler in Island County Superior Court March 23 with second-degree theft, which is a felony.
Deputy Jim Covert responded to a Jan. 11 report of a theft from an employee’s locker at the school cafeteria. The cafeteria employees work for a food services company that contracts with the school district.
An employee reported that she came to work with more than $2,000 in cash inside her purse, which she planned to give to a family member. After leaving work, she realized that $1,000 was missing.
A number of employees also reported small thefts at the cafeteria. They pointed to Plyler as a possible suspect because she continually complained about money problems, the report states.
Plyler later admitted to the theft in an interview with Covert, the report states. She said she grabbed a handful of cash, Covert wrote, and didn’t mean to take so much. She said she didn’t realize that they were $100 bills, documents show.
“She stated she was remorseful and apologized,” the deputy wrote.
If convicted of the charge, Plyler could face up to 60 days in jail under the standard sentencing range.
