Meadowdale took advantage of 38 Oak Harbor turnovers to defeat the Wildcat girls basketball team 48-33 in Oak Harbor Wednesday, Jan. 25.

The Mavericks, who committed 20 turnovers of their own, parlayed the Oak Harbor mistakes into 50 shots, 27 more than the Wildcats attempted, and hit 18 (36 percent) to secure the Wesco win.

Oak Harbor also struggled from the field (24 percent, 8-for-33), but kept pace the first half buy sinking 10 of 13.

Meadowdale (7-6, 8-9) led 12-6 after the first quarter and only 21-18 at halftime even though Oak Harbor made only three first-half field goals, one coming with six seconds left.

The Mavericks, behind Margreet Barhoum, took over in the third quarter.

Barhoum, who leads Wesco with an 18.9 average, scored only five points in the first half as she sat much of the second quarter in foul trouble.

She scored nine points in the first four minutes of the third quarter as the Mavs raced to a 31-20 lead. Meadowdale continued on a 15-2 run, helped by 12 Oak Harbor turnovers, and grabbed the game’s biggest lead, 37-20, with 2:46 left.

From there, Oak Harbor chipped away with a basket by Ciera Wiser and three-balls from Marissa Lewis and Annie Leete and trailed 39-28 at the quarter.

Three more points by Wiser cut it to 41-31 with five minutes left in the game. A Leete three-pointer rimmed out that would have narrowed the gap to seven, and Meadowdale bounced back to score seven straight points that wrapped up the win.

Oak Harbor did out-rebound the taller Mavericks 31-27 and played “all right” defense, according to coach Trisha Clayville.

Leete scored 12 points, Wiser seven, Lewis three, Dominique Jackson three, Jalani Bobo two, Lia Pantoleon two, Rayan Russell two and Morgan Young two.

The Wildcats (1-11, 2-14) travel twice this weekend, going to Mountlake Terrace (2-9, 4-11) Friday at 7:15 p.m. and Shorewood (6-5, 7-8) Saturday at 5.
