William Burnett’s letter to the editor regarding Kelly Emerson’s wishing to start the commissioners’ meeting with prayer shows precisely why it should never have been proposed.

1. There’s no good reason to change the status quo. The civility Emerson wishes the prayers to bring should already be a matter of course.

2. It creates unnecessary controversy and takes time away from more important matters.

3. It wastes taxpayers’ money.

I would like for the commissioners to focus on county business.
