What was supposed to be a fun fishing excursion on a new boat became a day-long ordeal for an Oak Harbor man earlier this month.

Ken Lund, was traveling in his 24-foot boat, Foxy Lady, on the evening of March 14 near Anacortes when it broke down and he was left drifting. Overnight, he drifted from Anacortes toward Clark Island, one of the San Juan islands.

Lund, who has lived in Oak Harbor since 1979, said he spent the evening fishing and praying while he drifted in Puget Sound. He said he was originally carried toward open ocean but then eventually switched directions and headed toward Clark Island.

The Coast Guard received its first report about the Foxy Lady at approximately 7 a.m. March 15. Officials said communication with the vessel was spotty and its location was tough to determine because the boat lacked a GPS system. Officials added that Lund had said he wasn’t in any immediate distress, but would accept help from a commercial tow boat.

A boat from Vessel Assist eventually was dispatched to search for the Foxy Lady, but couldn’t find it. By the time Lund’s boat neared Clark Island, a Coast Guard vessel finally located it.

The Foxy Lady was towed to Gooseberry Point on Lummi Island for repairs. With repairs made, his boat is now back in Anacortes and ready for his next trip.
