Oak Harbor’s 13-year-old Babe Ruth baseball team sponsored by Frontier Cheverolet came to play in Saturday’s district tournament at Mount Vernon.

Coach Bill Young said the team has struggled this season, but pulled things together and had a good first game at the tournament.

Matched against Burlington in Saturday’s opening round, Oak Harbor battled the entire game committing no errors and took the contest into the eighth inning before going down to defeat 2-1.

Burlington took a 1-0 lead with a run in the bottom of the first inning, but Oak Harbor pitchers David Kusnick and Teddy Peterschmidt shut Burlington down for the next six innings.

In the top of the seventh, Oak Harbor’s Anthony Smith singled to lead off the inning and then stole second base.

Peterschmidt’s second hit of the game advanced Smith to third, but the next two batters struck out and things were looking bleak.

With first base open Burlington decided to intentionally walk cleanup hitter Rhys Mattila, but a passed ball allowed Smith to race home with the tying run.

Burlington pushed across the game-winning run in the bottom of the eighth, putting the first two runners on base with back-to-back singles.

Peterschmidt struck out the next batter, but a bad hop single over Tom Horton’s head at third base resulted in the winning run crossing the plate.

Oak Harbor had four hits and drew six walks, but stranded 10 runners on base.

Sedro-Woolley Red 10, Oak Harbor 3

In Sunday’s loser-out game against the Sedro-Woolley Red team, errors played a major role and Oak Harbor was eliminated from competition with a 10-3 loss.

Oak Harbor made nine errors in the game and Young said seven of Sedro-Woolley’s 10 runs were the result of fielding miscues.

Young said the kids put the bat on the ball and only struck out five times, drew six walks and had three hits, but errors ended any chance of the team advancing in the tournament.
