Squadron boating course offered
The Deception Pass Sail & Power Squadron offers a squadron boating course on Monday and Wednesday evenings from 7 to 9 p.m. beginning Sept. 8 and continuing through Sept. 24.
This six-session course covers boating basics including rules of the road, boating safety, required equipment, navigational aids and “rules-of-the road”, light and sound signals, knot tying, radio operations and an introduction to piloting and chart reading.
This course will not only qualify boaters for the new Washington state safe boating cards, (now required for some boaters) it will give boaters a deeper understanding of seamanship.
The course is presented twice a week for three weeks at the Whidbey Island campus of Skagit Valley College, Hayes Hall Room 113, 1900 SE Pioneer Way in Oak Harbor.
The cost of the course is $50 per student and includes books. Spouses or family members who share a set of books are charged $25.
Registration and payment starts at 7 p.m. on Sept. 8.

Spring tryouts for NWAC
The North Whidbey Aquatic Club (NWAC) will be holding free tryouts during the month of September.
Those interested in becoming a club member can attend on Monday, Tuesday, or Thursday from 4:45 to 5:30 p.m. at John Vanderzicht Memorial Pool.
Minimum requirements are the ability to swim 25 meters in freestyle and backstroke.
Swimmers from 6 to 18 of age are welcome and the first two weeks are free.

Oak Harbor High School coach Pam Headridge announces tryouts for the team will begin at 9 a.m. Monday, Aug. 25 in the mat room at the high school.
Candidates must complete an athletic clearance form and have a current physical on file to be able to participate.
YMCA golf tourney Sept. 13
The Armed Services YMCA of Whidbey Island is hosting a golf tournament Saturday, Sept. 13, at the Gallery Golf Course.
This tournament is open to the public.
The cost to enter is $25, which is tax deductible, plus green fees, if you register prior to the tournament. Entry fee on the day of the tournament is $30.
The entry fee includes hors d’ oeuvers, drinks and prizes.
The event begins at 7:30 a.m. with check-in and tee assignments. Golfers will tee off between 8 and 10:15 a.m.
The tournament is limited to the first 75, so get your registration in early.
Registrations will be accepted at the YMCA, 540 SE Pioneer Way, Oak Harbor, or at the Gallery Golf Course pro shop.

Youth firearms training class
The Central Whidbey Sportsmen’s Association is hosting a youth firearms training class for youngsters ages 8 through 16 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 14, at the clubhouse on Safari Street off Highway 20, 2.5 miles south of Coupeville.
The class is free and will be taught by retired Island County Sheriff’s Department deputies.
Instruction will cover safety, proper handling, sighting, marksmanship, how to read a target, firearm laws, on range instruction and much more.
All firearms and ammunition will be provided, and each youth must be accompanied by an adult.

Boosters host golf tourney
The Coupeville Booster Club holds its second annual golf tournament beginning at 1 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 9, at the Gallery Golf Course.
Full round tickets are $100, which includes green fees and cart, plus dinner, auction and a drink coupon. Student tickets are $60 and dinner tickets alone are $40.
Registration will begin at 11:30 a.m., with shotgun start at 1 p.m. Gallery Golf Course Pro Mike Fields will conduct a half-hour free clinic for participants at the driving range from noon to 12:30 p.m.
Awards will be given for both men and women golfers for longest drive and longest putt. There will also be an award for closest to the pin, lowest team score and, of course, a hole in one. To help in this endeavor a golfer may also purchase up to five mulligans. Dinner, auction and awards will be held at the CPO Club starting at 6 p.m.
Proceeds will benefit the athletic programs at the Coupeville High School.
