I have just finished reading the book “Sudden Loss” by local author Richard F. Haines. It is a fictionalized story of a massive earthquake that hits the Puget Sound area and takes out the Deception Pass Bridge.
Although the author chose a fictionalized form to tell his story, nevertheless, he thoroughly researched it. The bridge is 75 years old and was never designed to carry the volume of traffic and the tremendous loads that pass over it daily. Although there is currently no political will to replace this beautiful bridge I, for one, will approach it in the future with some trepidation.
