Firefighters rescued a North Whidbey woman who was seriously injured and trapped under her own SUV Friday afternoon.

Island County Sheriff Mark Brown said that the woman, Estrella Santos, was getting into her vehicle at a Feather Lane home to go to a medical appointment. She got out of the vehicle after putting it into reverse and it started traveling backwards down the driveway.

“She tried to stop the vehicle from rolling and ended up getting dragged underneath,” Brown said.

The woman’s daughter-in-law called 911 at 12:39 p.m. after she looked out the window and saw the SUV in the bushes.

Marv Koorn, chief of North Whidbey Fire and Rescue, responded to the scene with fellow firefighters, law enforcement and ambulance crews. He said it appeared Santos was dragged between 50 to 75 feet.

“Fortunately, the wheels didn’t run over her,” he said.

The responders lifted the vehicle off the woman with a hydraulic jack and blocked it with wood to keep it from falling on her.

“It didn’t take us long,” Koorn said.

An ambulance transported Santos to Whidbey General Hospital. Trish Rose, hospital spokesperson, said Santos was airlifted in critical condition to Harborview Medical Center in Seattle.

A Harborview spokesperson said Santos was still in critical condition Tuesday.
