A two car collision in the San de Fuca area closed Highway 20 for about 30 minutes Tuesday.

According to Trooper Jason Nichols with the Washington State Patrol, the accident occurred at about 3:45 p.m. in front of the old fire station at the intersection of Holbrook Road and the state route.

The two vehicles involved were a 2011 Dodge Grand Caravan driven by Langley resident Santi Kongmanivong and a 2002 Dodge Ram pickup truck driven by David Anderson of Oak Harbor.

Kongmanivong was westbound on Highway 20 and was passing through the intersection when the accident occurred. According to Nichols, Anderson was on Holbrook and a state Department of Transportation road crew that was in the area at the time reported seeing him perform a “California stop” by rolling through the stop sign.

“He didn’t stop and hit the van,” Nichols said.

Kongmanivong, who was working and on his way back to Langley, said the incident happened very quickly.

“I just saw a red flash,” he said. “I hit the brakes and the air bags went off.”

Neither man was injured in the collision but Kongmanivong did say he planned to go to Whidbey General Hospital as a precautionary measure.

The van Kongmanivong was driving suffered extensive damage and had to be towed away. Anderson’s vehicle was also damaged, but was able to leave on it’s own power, Nichols said.

Nichols said he cited Anderson for negligent driving. Drugs or alcohol were not a factor in the crash, he said.

The accident resulted in both lanes of traffic being closed for about one-half hour and the eastbound lane being closed for an additional 20 minutes.
