Led by 100-yard butterfly champion Caley Powers, the Oak Harbor High School swim team finished third in the district meet at Marysville-Pilchuck High School Friday and Saturday, Feb. 14 and 15, and qualified five individuals for the state meet.
Micah Geist, Joe Gorman and Cedric Cabigting will join Powers at state in individual events, and Dakota Powers will join him on two relays.
The first four in each event at district earned a spot in the state meet, which is Friday and Saturday, Feb. 21 and 22, at the King County Aquatic Center in Federal Way.
Other Oak Harbor swimmers could be added to the state roster through wild-card entries.
Shorewood defended its district title by piling up 516 points. Shorecrest finished second in the 10-team field with 473, and Oak Harbor, the Wesco North champion, tallied 284.
Caley Powers was nearly a two-time district champion. He won the 100 fly in 53.24 and was eked out of the 50-free title by a mere .01 seconds, swimming a 22.5 to Shorewood Galen Kinter’s 22.49.
Powers teamed up with Cabigting, Geist and his brother Dakota to finish third in both the 200 medley relay (1:48.12) and 200 free relay (1:35.87).
Geist (200 individual medley, 2:11.14), Gorman (500 free, 5:16.05) and Cabigting (100 back, 59.95) all placed fourth and secured a state trip.
Gorman narrowly missed qualifying in the 200 free (1:57.53) by finishing fifth.
