Burlington #1 upset the Oak Harbor Legion baseball team 7-2 in the opening round of the district tournament at Mount Vernon’s Sherman Anderson Field Wednesday, July 20.

Oak Harbor (16-14) next plays Saturday, July 23, at 2 p.m. at Sherman Anderson Field against a to-be-determined opponent in the double elimination tournament.

Burlington entered the tournament with a 4-10 league record and the No. 7 seed and had lost twice (8-0, 7-2) to No. 2 seed Oak Harbor (12-2 in league) during the regular season.

The Sox took advantage of 10 Oak Harbor walks and three errors to hand the Wildcats the unlikely loss. It could have been worse for Oak Harbor, but Burlington left 14 runners on base. The Wildcats stranded 10.

Oak Harbor scored first in the third inning. Anthony Stewart was hit by a pitch and scored after singles by David Kusnick and Zach Zimmer.

After stranding eight runners over the first four innings, Burlington scored three runs in the fifth to go up for good 3-1. A single, error and two doubles led to the three runs.

The Wildcats scored once in the fifth to trim the Burlington lead to 3-2. Jack Richter drove a double high off the tall screen in left field and eventually scored on a ground out by Austyn Walker.

Burlington padded its lead with two runs on no hits in the sixth. Two errors started the inning, then a walk, hit batter and sacrifice fly produced the two runs.

The winners picked up their final two runs in the seventh on a hit batter, two walks, an infield hit and a sacrifice fly.

Pitcher Lane Askvig paced Burlington, fanning 12 en route to a six-hit complete game. He also had three hits, including two doubles.

Andrew Snavely collected two singles for Oak Harbor.
