For the season successive season, the Wildcats dropped all three games at the tournament at Bellevue Community College, the latest setback a 67-47 loss to Renton Friday, Dec. 30.

Oak Harbor coach Mike Washington Sr. said he hopes the rugged nonleague games will better “prepare us for our conference.”

The Wildcats (3-3, 3-7) get back into Wesco play Tuesday, Jan. 3, at Glacier Peak (4-3, 6-4) at 7:15 p.m.

The Renton game was close for three quarters, then the Indians “wore us down with their athleticism,”  Washington Sr. said, as Renton outscored Oak Harbor 23-9 in the final quarter to pull away.

Oak Harbor led after the first quarter 11-10, and Renton went up 26-22 at the half and 44-38 after the third quarter.

The Indians hurt Oak Harbor by taking advantage of turnovers and offensive rebounds. Renton scored 22 points off turnovers to Oak Harbor’s six after committing eight less mistakes than the Wildcats’ 19.

The Indians had 19 offensive rebounds to Oak Harbor’s 17 and outscored the ‘Cats 20-14 in second half points.

Add that to a hot night from three-point range, and Renton pulled out the win. The Indians drilled seven of its nine three-point attempts (77.8 percent), while Oak Harbor hit one less in 13 more tries (27.3 percent).

Mike Washington Jr. scored a game-high 20 points. Drew Washington was next in line with nine points, Matt Burgoyne had eight, Dayne Herron four, JoJo Webster four and Cameron Faulkner two.

Burgoyne had eight rebounds, Webster four assists and Herron two blocks.

Jonathan Patterson and Justin Pienh had 17 points each for the Indians.
