After a sluggish start, the Coupeville High School baseball team took advantage of Concrete’s generosity to defeat the visiting Lions 10-2 Wednesday, April 15, in a non-conference game.

The Wolves (1-0, 5-4) take a three-game win streak into a conference game with Chimacum (1-0, 2-7) at 4 p.m. Thursday, April 16, in Coupeville. The Wolves will also play at home Saturday at 2 p.m. against Friday Harbor (5-2) in a nonleague game.

After a lackluster start against Concrete, Coupeville coach Willie Smith said the team had a “meeting of the minds.”

“I just simply told them that they needed to change the effort and attitude or else the result of the game would not be good.”

Message received. The Wolves exploded for seven runs (on only two hits) in the bottom of the second inning.

A walk, error and hit batter loaded the bases, then an error off the bat of Josh Bayne produced two runs. Bayne stole second, and Cole Payne followed with a two-run single.

A walk, error and infield single by Aaron Trumbull pushed across three more runs.

The Wolves tacked on three runs in the sixth. Payne ignited the inning with a single and then stole second, third and home. The final theft coming on a double steal after Kyle Bodamer walked.

Trumbull added his second infield hit, then substitute Cameron Toomey-Stout ripped a two-strike, two-run single for his first varsity hit and RBIs.

Trumbull picked up the pitching win. He gave up two walks and a double for a run in the first inning and then settled in, allowing only three hits the rest of the way.

“Offensively, we didn’t really hit the ball all that well, but we did do a nice job of being patient at the plate, getting eight walks and two hit batters on the day,” Smith said.
