The inability to score has been a sore spot for the Oak Harbor girls basketball team all season, and that wound was particularly raw last weekend as the Wildcats lost 41-18 at Mountlake Terrace Friday, Jan. 27, and 63-39 at Shorewood Saturday, Jan. 28.

The Wildcats, who entered the Terrace game with only one league win, targeted the two-win Hawks as a team they could beat. However, Oak Harbor couldn’t hit the bullseye and shot a frigid 14 percent (6-for-42) which wiped out a 48-32 advantage on the boards.

Oak Harbor never scored more than six points in a quarter, and only one player, Ciera Wiser, made more than on field goal.

In addition to the poor shooting, Oak Harbor committed 35 turnovers to the Hawks’ 19.

After a sloppy start when the teams combined for six turnovers and five missed shots before the game’s first points were scored, Terrace (3-9, 5-11) went up 8-4 and 16-9 at the end of the first two quarters. They buried the Wildcats in the third quarter 16-3 to go up 32-12.

Coach Trisha Clayville said, “We struggled all the way around with the exception of Natalie (Fiallos), who continues to get better with each game.”

Wiser, who also collected a team-high eight rebounds, finished with five points, Lia Pantoleon three, Kelsey Rankin three, Kaileen Burleson two, Rayan Russell two, Dominique Jackson two and Annie Leete one.

Against Shorewood (7-6, 8-9), Oak Harbor shot better but not well, hitting 27 percent (14-for-51). The Wildcats’ inability to contest the Thunderbirds’ three-point shooters also caused problems, according to Clayville.

Five different T-birds combined to drill eight three-pointers.

Shorewood jumped to a 9-0 lead and the margin stayed about 10 points throughout the first half as the Thunderbirds led 16-8 and 32-21 at the quarters.

An 18-7 Shorewood spurt in the third quarter did-in the Wildcats.

Wiser scored 11 points, Leete 10, Jackson six, Morgan Young four, Jalani Bobo four, Marissa Lewis two and Rankin two. Wiser also grabbed 11 rebounds and Young six.

Clayville saw some positives in the game: “We were able to capitalize on their press and pull them out of it for the first time this year…Natalie, Jalani and Morgan played their best games of the year.”

Oak Harbor (1-13, 2-16) travels to Glacier Peak (11-3, 14-4) Tuesday, Jan. 31, and then finishes the season at home with Marysville Getchell (0-14, 0-18) Thursday, Feb. 2, at 7:15 p.m.
