Good golfing
runs in family
Mike Fields, golf pro at Whidbey’s Gallery Golf Course, watched proudly last weekend when his two kids excelled at the Washington Junior Golf Association District 1 tournament.
Austin Fields, 13, was runner-up in his division. His two rounds of 81 and 87 for a combined 168 was second in a field of 14, and qualified him for news week’s WJGA state tournament in Spokane.
Joining her brother at state will be Christine Fields, 11, who won the District 1 title with non-hole rounds if 62 and 57, besting two other competitors in her division.
“I’m very proud of them,” said the Gallery pro. Another Whidbey Island youth, Phil Reedy, 16, also qualified for state in his division.
Good running runs in family
Whidbey Island brothers Kyle and Tyler King turned in outstanding performances last week at the Washington State Cross Country Coaches’ Association East-West All Star Meet held at Woodland Park in Seattle.
Kyle King, who just finished his senior year at Oak Harbor High School, placed second overall in the 5K race in 16:03. A group of five runners finished within three seconds of each other, including the defending state champ.
Younger brother Tyler King was the first high school freshman to cross the finish line in a winning time of 17:35. Both brothers were on Oak Harbor’s cross country team last school year.
Kyle King will enter Eastern Washington University this fall where he plans to continue his cross country career.
