A 23-year-old Marine charged with five counts of domestic violence-related crimes was held in jail last week on $50,000 bail, according to court documents.

Prosecutors charged Hayron Garcialemus in Island County Superior Court May 20 with second-degree assault with a deadly weapon, second-degree assault by strangulation, fourth-degree assault and reckless endangerment. All of those charges include a special allegation of domestic violence.

In addition, prosecutors charged Garcialemus with interfering with the reporting of domestic violence.

Oak Harbor Police Officer Tony Slowik responded to a 911 report of a domestic assault early in the morning of May 17. Garcialemus’ wife, who was shaking uncontrollably, said that her husband had pinned her down and choked her, Slowik wrote.

The officer wrote that the 22-year-old woman had scratches and bruising consistent with strangulation.

Garcialemus admitted that he had pinned his wife during an argument and had covered her mouth “because she wouldn’t shut up,” Slowik wrote.

Detective Sgt. Teri Gardner interviewed the alleged victim the next day. The woman described a history of domestic violence that began after the couple were married, Gardner wrote.

In an incident in February, the woman said Garcialemus got mad after she opened blinds in the bedroom to take care of the baby while he was sleeping. She claimed he dragged her by the hair while she was carrying the baby and kicked her, the report states.

When she tried to call the police, Garcialemus grabbed the phone from her, ripped out the batteries and then took her cell phone, Gardner wrote.

In addition, the woman claimed Garcialemus pointed a loaded handgun at her on May 15, the report indicates.

“Hayron was laughing and smiling at her because she was scared and was telling him to stop,” Gardner wrote.

Garcialemus then went into the kitchen and the gun went off, court documents say. The bullet went through a pantry door, two bathroom walls and into the garage.

Garcialemus admitted to Slowik that he shot the gun in the home, the officer wrote.

Garcialemus is a Marine sergeant with VAQ-129 at Whidbey Island Naval Air Station, according to the base public affairs officer.
