Three-car rear-ender bottlenecks traffic

A man, woman and two toddlers were taken to the hospital as a precautionary measure as a result of a three car accident that occurred Monday morning on Highway 20 near the intersection with Jones Road.

At approximately 9:25 a.m. a 2000 Chevy Astro minivan was stopped on Highway 20 north of the intersection of Jones Road because the driver, Erika Romero, was trying to make a left turn into a driveway. That’s when a 2004 Ford Explorer, driven by Oak Harbor resident Benjamin Brannen, collided with the minivan, said Trooper Josh Lancaster with the Washington State Patrol.

The impact of that collision pushed the car into the southbound lane where it collided with a 2007 Acura STX that was driven by Oak Harbor resident Kenneth Hurst. Lancaster said Hurst tried to avoid colliding with the minivan but gave the vehicle a glancing blow.

Lancaster said there didn’t appear to be any significant injuries.  Northbound traffic was diverted onto a frontage road while emergency personnel dealt with the accident.

The trooper said the driver of the Explorer will be cited for driving too fast to avoid a collision.
