Maybe Coupeville’s 2-0 baseball win over Klahowya last week wasn’t an upset.

The Wolves beat the Eagles again, this time 10-2 Wednesday, April 27, in Silverdale to cement its hold on first play in the Olympic League 1A Division.

Klahowya, the defending conference champion, went into the first game ranked third in the 1A state poll with a 10-2 record. Coupeville was 6-7.

The Eagles slipped to sixth in the next poll while the Wolves debuted at ninth.

They’ll have to adjust the rankings once more with the latest Wolves win.

Coupeville upped its league record to 6-0 (9-8), followed by Klahowya (4-2, 13-4), Chimacum (2-4, 5-9) and Port Townsend (0-6, 0-13).

Three games remain, one against each team; and one win will clinch the conference crown for the Wolves.

Coupeville can snare that win when its hosts winless Port Townsend at 4 p.m. Friday, April 29.

Nursing a 3-1 lead going into the sixth inning Wednesday, Coupeville rallied for seven runs to subdue the Eagles.

The highlight of the game, coach Marc Aparicio said, was the Wolves’ team effort.

Thirteen played, nine registered hits and eight scored.

“Every player performed when called upon,” Aparicio said.

The Wolves collected numerous stolen bases, had “great timely bunts and hits” and “great base running,” according to Aparicio.

Coupeville opened the scoring in the third inning. Matt Hilborn boarded on an error and took advantage of two more Eagle mistakes to score.

Klahowya used a walk and hit to tie the score in the bottom of the inning.

The Wolves scored twice in the fifth. Pinch hitter Dane Lucero walked and pinch runner Nick Etzell took over, and with “some smart base running,” scored on a single by Hunter Smith.

That ignited the Wolves, Aparicio said.

Cole Payne singled in Smith.

The momentum carried over into the next inning when Coupeville tallied seven runs.

The Wolves started the inning with six straight hits. Gabe Wynn and Clay Reilly each singled, then Wynn scored on Ethan Marx’s base hit. After Marx was thrown out on the bases, Hilborn doubled. Hunter Smith and CJ Smith followed with singles.

After an out, the Wolves added two more hits, a double by Julian Welling and a single by Kory Score.

Then came a walk to Wynn and another hit by Reilly.

Hunter Smith and Reilly finished the game with two hits. CJ Smith, Payne, Welling, Score, Wynn, Marx and Hilborn had one each.

Hunter Smith got the pitching win, and Welling helped with seventh-inning relief. Smith, playing shortstop, ended the game with an unassisted double play.
