An eight-run first inning spurred the Oak Harbor Legion AA baseball team to an 11-2 win over Ferndale in the opening game of the Steamer Invitational Tournament in Anacortes Thursday, June 17.
Oak Harbor continues tournament play today, June 18, when it takes on host Anacortes at 11 a.m. and Moon Valley of Duvall at 1:15 p.m. Saturday, June 19, Oak Harbor faces Wenatchee at 7 p.m.
In the win over Ferndale, Oak Harbor had just two hits in the eight-run first, both by Yale Rosen for three RBI. The Wildcats were aided by six walks and two hit batters.
Oak Harbor tacked on three more runs in the fourth. Jay Stout and Rosen started the inning with infield hits. Josh Evans scored Stout with a sacrifice fly and Rosen scored on a wild pitch. Justin Counts walked and eventual scored on Brad Farnum’s double.
Stout earned the win on the mound; Ryan Byrne pitched the fifth and struck out the side. The game was called after five innings because of the tournament’s eight-run mercy rule.
