Seventeen seniors at Coupeville High School were suspended from a prank they played in the school over the weekend.

At approximately 1:30 a.m. Sunday morning, the group of seniors somehow entered the school, went into the library, removed books from the shelves and placed them on the floor.

High School Principal Sheldon Rosenkrance said their wasn’t any damage to the school or the materials.

“They weren’t trying to do any malicious damage,” Rosenkrance said. Even though there wasn’t any damage, he said the students need to accept the consequences of their actions.

Rosenkrance said the seniors participating in the prank were caught because the school’s alarm sounded and the building’s surveillance cameras caught them on video.

He said staff is investigating how the students entered the building.

The seniors were suspended through Thursday, meaning they won’t be able to participate in the senior assembly, which begins at 9 a.m. in the Performing Arts Center, or the senior parade, which takes place after the assembly.

The 17 seniors comprise a significant fraction of the approximately 75-member class. They will still be able to participate in the graduation ceremony, scheduled for Friday, June 6, 6 p.m. at the Coupeville High School Gymnasium.

Although the students are suspended, they will still be able to take their final exams throughout the week. When they aren’t being tested, they will have to leave the campus, Rosenkrance said.

In addition to the suspensions, the students will have to complete some community service at the high school during the summer. He said he hasn’t worked out the community service with the students yet.
