Coupeville’s Alexis Trumbull pitched a no-hitter – and lost – as the Wolves kicked away a fastpitch game at Archbishop Thomas Murphy 3-2 Wednesday, March 24.
Trumbull was the victim of seven errors (at least one by each infielder, including the catcher) and her own wildness.
With the score tied 2-2 heading into the bottom of the seventh, Trumbull walked the lead-off hitter. After two outs, the Wolves committed two errors to load the bases. Trumbull then walked in the winning run on four straight pitches.
A mixture of errors and walks contributed to the Wildcats’ (2-0, 3-1) two other runs in the fourth inning.
Trumbull finished with no earned runs, two strikeouts, four walks and two hit batters.
Trumbull was also Coupeville’s top hitter, going 2-for-3 with two singles.
The Wolves scored two runs in the fourth on four straight hits. Singles by Bessie Walstad, Trumbull and Maria Rockwell loaded the bases with one out. Roxy Piechowski followed with a bloop double down the right-field line to plate two runs.
Coupeville had only two other hits in the game.
Coach Denny Zylstra said that the defense was shaky, but at times his players made some sterling defensive plays. He was also pleased with the offense: “We hit the ball hard, really stung the ball.”
The Wolves (0-1, 1-2) host Granite Falls (3-0, 4-0) Friday, March 26, at 4 p.m.
