The Oak Harbor High School swim team could drown Monday as board members are set to discuss a revised North Whidbey Park and Recreation District proposal for practice times at the John Vanderzicht Memorial Pool.

In a memo to the board, Superintendent Rick Schulte stated that he is still not satisfied with the amount of swim time and space being offered to the team each week. Schulte requested at least three lanes for 90 minutes of practice on a consistent schedule. However, due to the high level of activities that take place at the pool, such as swim lessons, community classes, open swims and North Whidbey Aquatic Club practices, Pool Director Craig Carlson said he isn’t able to give the district everything they want.

In an earlier interview, Carlson said everyone is making sacrifices and park district commissioners are doing the best they can to satisfy all of their customers.

Schulte said after meeting with Athletic Director Nicki Luper and high school Principal Dwight Lundstrom, the group came to the conclusion that the funds used for the swim team could be better used to support other activities and to help reduce the district’s costs.
