Piper, Zook claim sub-regional titles | Wrestling

The Wildcat pair will be joined by six teammates who qualified for the boys 3A regional meet at 10 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 13, at Marysville-Pilchuck High School.

Both Oak Harbor girls who competed in the sub-regional last weekend at Bellingham High School finished second and will advanced to their regional meet for all classifications at 10 a.m. at Bellingham’s Squalicum High School Saturday.

The top four finishers in each weight class in both the boys and girls regional meets qualify for the state tournament.

In team scoring, the Wildcat boys placed fifth out of seven teams with 185 points. Top-ranked Arlington won with 392.5.

On the girls side, Oak Harbor was 11th out of 29 schools although only two Wildcats took part.

At the boys sub-regional, the first four places earned regional berths.

In addition to Piper (152 pounds) and Zook (285), Blake Servatius (second at 106), Garrett Stahl (fourth, 120), Michael Lym (second, 132), Zach Aketch (fourth, 145) and Nick Dugin (fourth, 170) advance.

Zion Gomez was fifth at 120 and will be the alternate.

Piper won 12-8 and 19-4 to reach the finals, where he defeated Everett’s Brett Alfred 19-7.

Zook, who is undefeated, recorded three consecutive pins to take his title.

Servatius and Lym also reached the finals

Third-seeded Servatius pinned two opponents (including the second seed in the semifinals) before losing 13-4 in the finals to Marysville-Pilchuck’s Cole Durie.

Lym won two decisions, 8-2 and 15-8, before losing to Arlington’s third-ranked Gavin Rork in the championship bout.

For the girls, Caitlin Woodworth (155) won by a pin and 8-2 and then lost 10-1 to fifth-ranked Leigh Lamay of Mount Vernon.

Sixth-ranked Meredith Bain (190) received two byes, recorded a pin and then lost by a fall to Lynden’s Thalia Veliz.

“We won matches with great fundamentals and body position,” coach Larry Falcon said.
