Glacier Peak won the first match and the last, but the Oak Harbor wrestlers captured just about everything in between for a 53-16 win at home Tuesday, Jan. 3.

David Payne (160 pounds, 1:18), Hunter Vail (220, 1:03), Jahleel Vester (120, 1:13) and Mark Johnston (132, 1:53) all recorded first-round pins for the Wildcats.

Other winners were Joshua Crebbin (152, 14-5), Collin Higingbotham (172, 10-8, OT), Jeremy Alonzo (195, 11-7), Ray Quinday (285, 4-1), Cody Fakkema (126, 13-2), Tricia Desquitado (106, forfeit) and Jeremy Vester (113, forfeit).

All three loses came to state-ranked wrestlers. Nathanael Stanford (145, 12-4) and Ryuta Meany (138, fall, 1:32) lost to 11th-ranked opponents, and Josh Orritt (182, fall, 1:10) lost to third-ranked Sean Elledge, who placed fifth in the state last year.

Three Oak Harbor wrestlers (Fakkema, third; Jahleel Vester, eighth; and Johnston, ninth) earned state rankings this week.

Coach Mike Crebbin said, “Technically the kids wrestled really well. It’s nice to see them successful; they are really coachable and they want to improve.”

On the negative side, he noted that his team needs to work on conditioning after the winter break layoff.

Oak Harbor (2-0, 8-1) goes to Edmonds-Woodway for the Edmonds Invitational Tournament Saturday, Jan. 7, at 9:30 a.m. and then travels to Shorecrest to meet the Scots (0-2, 2-2) and Shorewood (2-0, 2-1) in a double dual meet Tuesday, Jan. 10, beginning at 5:45 p.m.

The Wildcats will host their annual Alumni Night Jan. 12.

All Oak Harbor wrestling alumni are invited to attend and be recognized at the meet against Everett; JV wrestles at 5:45 p.m. and the varsity at 7.

All attendees will have to pay admission per Wesco rules.
