After the first four minutes not much went right for the Coupeville High School girls basketball team in its 77-27 loss at Cedarcrest Tuesday, Dec. 10.

Coupeville coach David King said the game plan was to “handle the press, get out on the shooters, slow down the fast breaks and execute our offense.”

Those goals were met early but things fell apart midway through the first period, King said.

“Our execution disappeared and we started throwing the ball away,” King said. “These turnovers were converted into fast breaks.”

When the Red Wolves weren’t scoring off fast breaks, they were hitting threes. Cedarcrest, which connected on seven treys during the game, hit a trio of threes in the first quarter, all by Megan Ditore, and led 21-10 at the end of the quarter.

Hailey Hammer netted five points in the first period for Coupeville.

The second quarter was a disaster for Coupeville as Cedarcrest (1-0, 3-1) outscored the Wolves 23-7 to make it 44-17. Kalee Fowler did most of the damage, scoring 16 of her game-high 21 points in the period.

A three-ball by Amanda Fabrizi and buckets by Madeline Strasburg and Makana Stone in the quarter weren’t enough the keep the Wolves in the game.

Coupeville played with more energy in the third quarter, King said, but both teams struggled on offense as Cedarcrest scored eight points and the Wolves four.

To be successful in the future, King said, his team needs to be more precise on offense: “We need to be patient and take what the defense is giving us. When we do this, we are getting the shots we want. We need to get consistent at this.”

He added, “For us it’s all about believing we can compete with the teams in our league. Better execution on offense, and, on the defensive side of things, we need to get back to talking and having the lock down defense that we can play.”

Stone led Coupeville with eight points and 10 rebounds. Hammer added seven points and five rebounds, Bree Messner had two points and three assists, Strasburg had four points and five steals, Julia Myers had six rebounds and two blocks, and Fabrizi had six points.

Coupeville (0-1, 1-2) goes to Lakewood (0-1, 0-3) at 6:45 p.m. Friday, Dec. 13.
