(Editor’s note: I’m on vacation, but while I am sitting in the sun in North Carolina, I will try to give you quick roundups on what happened with the Oak Harbor and Coupeville high school teams in their recent contests — Jim Waller.)
TUESDAY, APRIL 21
The Oak Harbor boys golf team finished second out of the six Wesco North schools in a conference match at Whidbey Golf Club. The match was halted after nine holes because of bad weather.
Stanwood won with 211 strokes, six better than the Wildcats.
For the second match in a row, Oak Harbor’s Steven Timm tied for medalist honors, shooting a 39.
Oak Harbor’s baseball team pounded out 15 hits en route to an 8-3 win over host Stanwood. Extra base hits highlighted each scoring inning for Oak Harbor. C.J. Meders got things going with a home run in the first inning. Tyler Snavely doubled in the three-run third, and Kevyn Johnson tripled in the four-run fifth.
Snavely earned the pitching win, taking a shutout into the seventh.
The Oak Harbor girls golf team was second in a four-team match at Monroe. Glacier Peak won with 227 strokes, then came Oak Harbor (260), Meadowdale (268) and Monroe (289).
The Oak Harbor tennis team lost 5-2 at Marysville Getchell. The Wildcats won the third and fourth singles matches: 3, Tamia Rios, 6-1, 6-2; 4, Alyssa Eden, 6-0, 6-1.
Oak Harbor lost a wild 6-5 softball game at Glacier Peak. The Wildcats led 2-0 going into the sixth inning, then the Grizzlies tied it. Oak Harbor bounced back to score three in the top of the seventh, only to have GP counter with four in the bottom half for the win.
Kelly Findley and Alexa Findley each hit doubles for the ‘Cats.
Edmonds-Woodway defeated host Oak Harbor 6-1 in soccer. J.J. Mitchell scored for the Wildcats.
Top-ranked and undefeated Klahowya beat the visiting Coupeville baseball team 10-2. Nearly all of the Eagles’ runs were unearned as the Wolves played “perhaps their worst game of the year defensively,” according to coach Willie Smith.
Klahowya also topped Coupeville in softball, 9-1. Tiffany Brisco, Robin Cedillo and McKayla Bailey registered hits for the Wolves, and catcher Lauren Rose threw out three runners trying to steal.
Coupeville’s tennis match with Klahowya was stopped because of rain. The Wolves led in four matches after one set before the rain hit.
WEDNESDAY, APRIL 22
Oak Harbor scored four runs in the bottom of the seventh inning to stun visiting Stanwood 5-4. Brent Mertins, who went 2-for-4 in the game, ripped a two-run single to win the game in the seventh for the Wildcats.
Edmonds-Woodway blanked Oak Harbor 10-0 in softball on the Wildcat’s diamond.
Coupeville avenged a loss suffered earlier this spring to Granite Falls in tennis with a 5-2 win. The Wolves were down 2-0 before rallying to win four of the final five matches.
Winners for the Wolves: Singles — 1, Jacki Ginnings, 6-4, 7-6; 2, Wynter Thorne, 5-7, 6-2, 10-8; 3, Ana Luvera, 6-2, 6-4. Doubles — 3, Sydney Autio/Micky LeVine, 6-3, 7-5; 4, Ivy Luvera/McKenzie Meyer, 6-3, 3-6, 10-8.
