Josh Schrum, Cody Hernkind and Dominique Jackson grabbed slots in the state 3A track meet during the first day of the two-day District 1 meet in Oak Harbor Wednesday, May 16.
Finals were run in five boys and four girls events Wednesday in the 12-team meet; the remainder of the finals begin at 4:30 p.m. Friday, May 18, at Wildcat Memorial Stadium.
The top two in each event earn state berths.
Schrum out-kicked Shorecrest’s Carter Osborne to win the 1,600 in 4:17, the state’s eighth-best 3A time this spring.
Hernkind, who placed sixth in the long jump at the Wesco meet last week, added over a foot to his distance to claim second in a season-best 20-05.
Jackson finished third in the discus, but her toss of 121 feet bettered the automatic state qualifying mark of 120-03.5. She also placed sixth in the javelin (95-06).
It was a tough-luck day for a few Wildcats who placed third and missed state by one spot.
Chris Hailer jumped 6-0 in the high jump, the same height as the top two placers, but finished third by the tie-breaker of most misses.
James Harrison recorded a season-best 12-feet in the pole vault for third after placing ninth at league a week earlier. He had the same height as the second-place vaulter, but lost a vault-off for the state berth.
Ciera Wiser was third in the javelin (106-10).
The Oak Harbor boys are in first after Wednesday’s events with 39 points, and the girls are fourth with 18.
