The Whidbey Island Running Club picked up six firsts in the seven-team Fred Dean Invitational at West Seattle Stadium Saturday, May 21.
In the midget girls (11/12 years old) division, the team of Kaitlyn Chelberg, Laura Rodeheffer, Megan Keating and Carolynn Wicker finished first in the 4×400 relay (4:59.5).
Rodeheffer came from behind to win the 800 (2:36) and Wicker was third in a personal best 2:41. Rodeheffer added a third in the 1,500 (5:16).
Chelberg was third in the 400 (1:09) and fourth in the 100 (14.3). Amaya Rittierodt placed fifth in the long jump (9-02) and sixth in the 100 (14.6). Keating was fourth in the long jump (10-01).
In midget boys, Michael Fisken PR’ed by nearly three feet to win the shot put (23-01), and Oliver Hansen was fifth in the 100 (15.77).
In youth girls (13/14), Mallorie Mitchem picked up a first in the 800 (2:47), then ran second (5:49) to Jonalynn Horn (5:44) in the 1,500.
In youth boys, Logan Clark trimmed 35 seconds off his 2010 best to win the 1,500 (4:54).

The Whidbey Island Running Club offers track and field opportunities for youth ages 5-18 and competes in local meets and the USATF’s Junior Olympic series.
WIRC coach Catie Rodeheffer said new members are always welcome. She added that middle school and high school athletes can continue to improve upon their gains made during the school season and take their “competition to a new level.”

Coach Rodeheffer said the club recently added throwing coach Amy Jansen to the coaching staff. Jansen was a nationally-ranked shot and javelin thrower while at Northwestern College in Iowa.
