The Coupeville High School boys basketball team missed an opportunity to move into a tie for first place when it fell 67-51 at Port Townsend Friday, Jan. 22.
Had the Wolves (2-2, 7-7) won, they would have pulled even with Port Townsend (4-0, 6-9) atop the 1A division of the Olympic League.
Coupeville will try to hang onto second place when it entertains Chimacum (1-2, 4-11) at 3:45 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 26.
Port Townsend’s Karden Parcher scored eight points in the first quarter to help the Redhawks race to a 20-9 lead.
Parcher tallied another eight in the second period, but Coupeville’s Wiley Hesselgrave, Hunter Smith and Gabe Wynn each scored five points to help slice PT’s lead to 34-27 at halftime.
The Wolves received six points from Jordan Ford in the third quarter, and Coupeville was still within striking distance, 50-41, heading into the final period.
The Redhawks, however, put the Wolves away by outscoring them 17-10 in the fourth quarter.
Although Parcher didn’t score in the second half, he still had a game-high 16 points.
Ford topped Coupeville with 12 points, Smith had nine, Hesselgrave eight, Wynn eight, Risen Johnson six, J.J. Johnson three, Dante Mitchell two, Jared Helmstadter two and DeAndre Mitchell one.
