Marysville Getchell — more specifically Collin Montez — defeated the visiting Oak Harbor High School baseball team 4-0 Friday, April 1.
The win was the first of the year for the Chargers after five losses, and it came at a good time. The game was the Wesco North opener for both schools.
Montez, a junior left-hander, fired a one-hitter and struck out 10. He also slugged a home run and drove in three of Getchell’s runs.
The Wildcats wasted a strong pitching performance by Tyler Snavely, who threw a three-hitter, struck out seven, walked two and allowed zero earned runs. Montez’s home run was the only hit off Snavely until he surrendered a single and double in the sixth.
Snavely also achieved a rarity, striking out four hitters in one inning. In the first inning, the Charger leadoff hitter struck out but reached first on a strike-three passed ball. The next batter walked, and then Snavely worked out of the jam with a trio of strikeouts.
The Chargers scored all four runs in the second inning. A walk and two errors resulted in one run, then with two outs, Montez homered to finish the scoring.
Montez fanned the first five hitters he faced and didn’t allow a runner until a two-out walk to Snavely in the fourth inning. Oak Harbor’s only hit came in the sixth inning when Taylor Consford led off with a single.
Oak Harbor’s only other runner was Trent Benson, who walked in the sixth.
Oak Harbor (0-1, 2-3-1) plays Everett (0-1, 3-3) at 4 p.m. three times this week. The clubs meet in Oak Harbor on Tuesday and Friday and in Everett on Wednesday.
