Three men have been charged in connection with a vicious assault in Coupeville that left a man with a broken nose, four broken teeth and a fractured eye socket, court documents state.
Prosecutors charged 22-year-old Christopher Toliver of Bellingham in Island County Superior Court June 30 with second-degree assault. He pleaded not guilty July 13.
Prosecutors charged the two other men, 21-year-old David Kolbach and 22-year-old Michael Writesel, with assault in the second degree July 22. Kolback and Writesel are both Oak Harbor residents.
Detective Sgt. Mike Beech with the Island County Sheriff’s Office investigated the alleged assault that occurred at a Coupeville home April 4. Witnesses reported that a group of men came to a party uninvited and started a fight. The men kicked and stomped the victim while he was on the ground, the report indicates.
In an interview with the detective, Kolbach admitted to kicking the victim once, but he said he didn’t realize until later that the man he kicked was his friend, the report states.
Writesel told the detective he drank a lot that night and couldn’t remember anything, Beech wrote.
