It was a loss in the standings but not in the growth of the Coupeville High School volleyball team.
The Wolves fell 3-1 at first-place Klahowya Monday, Oct. 26, but the point Coupeville picked up in the match was the first set it has taken from the Eagles since entering the Olympic League last year. And the Wolves took the point in dramatic fashion, overcoming a 24-17 deficit and fending off two game points to win 28-26.
“At times, (we) played some of the best volleyball all season tonight,” coach Breanna Smedley said. “We battled and fought hard for every point. Klahowya is a strong team all around, and I’m pleased with the way we were able to not only hang with them, but take a game off them.”
The Eagles (5-0, 8-6) remained unbeaten in 1A Olympic League play; Coupeville slipped to 2-3 (4-8 overall) and out of a second-place tie with Chimacum (3-2, 8-7) with one match remaining.
Coupeville closes out the regular season with Port Townsend (0-5, 1-10) at home at 6:45 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 29.
Chimacum finishes with Klahowya Tuesday, Oct. 27.
Coupeville has clinched at district tournament spot, but who and where it plays will not be known until the regular season is completed.
Klahowya won Monday’s match 25-15, 25-20, 26-28, 25-21.
Tiffany Briscoe recorded four aces, six kills and 14 digs; Katrina McGranahan added two aces, four kills and three blocks; and Sydney Autio had three aces, 12 assists and nine digs.
Valen Trujillo chipped in with nine digs, Ally Roberts had five kills and Lauren Rose finished with 11 assists.
