A Freeland woman escaped with a toe injury after falling off her bicycle into the path of a semi truck.

Vicki Maddox, 49, and her husband were bicycling southward on the shoulder of Highway 20 near Coupeville at about 5 p.m. Saturday. Maddox said she struck the tire of her husband’s bike and she fell into the highway, right into the path of a southbound semi truck.

Austin Williams, the driver of the 1999 International tractor trailer, quickly swerved to avoid Maddox, but ran over her foot, the State Patrol reported. Williams is a 32-year-old resident of Hawaii, according to the accident report.

“I was about as close as I’ve ever been to death,” Maddox said Monday. She credits Williams’ quick action for preventing a much more serious accident.

Maddox was transported to the hospital.

“I broke my toe. That’s about it,” she said.
