A case against a 22-year-old Coupeville man accused of driving fast, crashing his car and injuring his passenger may go to trial, court documents indicate.

Darrell Davis pleaded not guilty in Island County Superior Court Dec. 19 to a charge of vehicular assault. His omnibus hearing was held Feb. 6.

Deputy Darren Crownover with the Island County Sheriff’s Office investigated the one-car accident that occurred on Smugglers Cove Road Aug. 28, 2011.

Crownover arrived at the scene to find a car upside down on the road. The front end was nearly detached and was smoldering. Paramedics were attending to a man who was lying in the road; he suffered a large laceration on his face and a broken ankle, the deputy wrote in his report.

The deputy contacted Davis, who was standing on the side of the road. Davis allegedly told the deputy that he had been driving the car more than 100 miles per hour when the accident occurred, according to the report.

Crownover wrote that skid marks indicated that Davis drove across the centerline into the southbound lane of traffic before leaving the roadway and striking a tree. Crownover calculated from the marks that the car had been traveling 110 miles per hour.

Davis is not accused of being under the influence while driving.
