Northwestern College of Orange City, Iowa, will induct 1992 Oak Harbor High School graduate the Rev. Dr. Trygve Johnson into its Athletic Hall of Fame Feb. 11.

Johnson, who graduated from Northwestern in 1996, ranks as the baseball team’s career leader in wins with a 31-15 record and innings pitched (262.6). He’s second in school history in strikeouts (220) and sixth in ERA (3.05). In addition to pitching, Johnson played third and first base. He compiled a .246 career batting average, with 103 hits, 71 runs, seven home runs and a .342 slugging percentage. In 1996 he won the Vander Stoep Award as Northwestern’s outstanding senior male student-athlete, and he received NAIA Scholar-Athlete honors in both his junior and senior years.

In addition to his athletic success, Johnson received Faculty Honors, the highest honor bestowed upon graduates by Northwestern’s professors, in 1996.

Johnson earned a Master of Divinity degree from Western Theological Seminary and returned to Northwestern to serve as chaplain and assistant baseball coach from 1999 to 2002.

He then pursued a doctorate in theology at the University of St. Andrews in Scotland. He has been the Hinga-Boersma Dean of the Chapel at Hope College since 2005.

At Oak Harbor High School, Johnson was a three-year letterman in basketball and baseball and earned all-state honors in baseball in 1992.

He is the son of Oak Harbor residents Dave and Arlene Johnson.
