An improved second round lifted Coupeville freshman Christine Fields to eighth place in the state 1A golf tournament to lead the trio of local prep golfers who competed at state Tuesday and Wednesday, May 22 and 23.

Her brother Austin Fields, a Coupeville junior, placed 36th in the boys 1A tournament at the weather-challenged Home Course in DuPont, and Oak Harbor sophomore Annie Leete finished 23rd in the 3A girls championship at Spokane’s Esmeralda Golf Course.

Christine Fields sat in 13th place after shooting a 97 the first day at the Home Course, then recorded the second round’s sixth-best score of 89 to jump to eighth with a 186.

Austin Fields shot rounds of 85 and 86 for a 171. He placed 37th last spring.

Leete carded an 84 and an 83 for a 167 total.

Oak Harbor coach Andy Wesley said, “Annie played strong and confident for her first time playing in the state tournament.”
