The Friday Harbor High School boys basketball team came out on fire and never cooled as it burned host Coupeville 73-20 Tuesday, Dec. 20.
The Wolverines hit six of their first seven shots and concluded the first quarter by nailing 11 of 14 for a 23-4 lead. They pushed that bulge to 47-9 at the break.
Coupeville was as cold as Friday Harbor was hot. The Wolves sank only three of their 19 first-half attempts.
The Wolves helped feed the Wolverine fire by committing 15 first-half turnovers.
Coupeville settled down the second half and took better care of the ball, committing only eight turnovers, but its cold shooting continued.
Friday Harbor led 64-15 heading into the final period.
For the game, the Wolves connected on six of 33 shots for 18 percent. Friday Harbor shot at a remarkable 72 percent pace, sinking 31 of 43 shots. It was equally as hot at the line, hitting seven of eight to Coupeville’s three of eight.
Nick Streubel led Coupeville with six points. Carson Risner added five, Taylor Ebersole four, Gavin O’Keefe three and Drew Chan two.
The Wolverines had four players in double figures, topped by Donald Galt with 13.
The Wolves (0-6) entertain Bellevue Christian at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 21, in a nonleague game. BC, which has placed in six of the past seven state 1A tournaments, is 6-1 this year.
