It took two extra innings, but the Eastlake Tigers defeated the host Oak Harbor Legion AA baseball team 4-3 in the second game to complete a double-header sweep Saturday, June 16.
The Tigers topped Oak Harbor 8-3 in the opener.
Eastlake cruised to an 8-0 lead in the first game before Oak Harbor put together a three-run sixth.
Grant Schroeder’s double and singles by Brent Mertins, Cory Cameron and Nate Stanford highlighted the inning.
Stanford, Cameron and Mertins each finished with two hits, and Anthony Stewart added a single.
In the second game, Eastlake scored three in the second and held the lead until the Wildcats responded with another three-run inning in the fourth to tie it up.
CJ Meders led with an error and Daniel Wolfe followed with a single. A fielder’s choice and error off the bat of Stewart scored one run, then Clay Doughty singled two to knot the score.
Both teams threatened twice over the next four innings, and each during two double plays to thwart the rallies.
The Tigers finally pushed across another run in the ninth and Oak Harbor couldn’t counter.
Stanford had another two-hit game, and Mike Maletto, Jack Richter and Cameron also singled.
The two nonleague losses dropped Oak Harbor’s summer record to 4-9, 2-3 in league.
The Wildcats play Ferndale (3-1) in a league double header beginning at 4:30 p.m. Tuesday, June 19, in Oak Harbor.
