In response to Marie Akins’ letter regarding school levies, I agree that I can not afford to pay another dime in property taxes. I cannot however condone her reasoning that she should be exempt because her children have not been in school for many years.
It is the responsibility of every citizen to support the children of this country for as long as we live. I am not affiliated with any of the shcool districts in Island County, nor do I have any children enrolled in school here, but I too have lived here for over 40 years, and want nothing less than the best education possible for the children of our community.
I am not convinced that it means throwing money at the problem though. As far as our property tax structure goes I am quite baffled, since I once lived in Kona, Hawaii, where my home was worth twice that of my current residence. I paid less than $400 a year in property tax, whereas here I am taxed more than three times as much. Maybe the schools are better her!
