Little League general meeting

The North Whidbey Little League will hold its annual general meeting at 7 p.m. Thursday, June 19, in the Centennial Room at the First United Methodist Church on SE Ireland Street in Oak Harbor.

The meeting is required by Little League International for the purpose of presenting the “State of the League Report” by the 2008 board of directors, determining the number of board members above the minimum required and taking nominations for the 2009 board of directors.

This is an opportunity for NWLL parents to join in on the discussion regarding league activities and be a part of the decision-making process of electing the 2009 board of directors.

“Please continue your support of North Whidbey Little League by attending this meeting and expressing your views,” said board member Rita Cline.

Tee time for golf classic

The 16th Annual Whidbey Island Golf Classic tournament and dinner will be held Friday, June 20, at the Whidbey Golf and Country Club.

This event, underwritten each year by Whidbey Island Bank, benefits the Skagit Valley College Foundation for Whidbey campus scholarships.

Golf camp at country club

The Whidbey Golf and Country Club is hosting a junior golf camp from 1 to 3 p.m. June 30 through July 2 at the club.

The cost is $75 per player and includes a barbecue following the last day of camp.

Youth sailing lessons at marina

Two sessions of beginning and intermediate youth sailing lessons will be offered by the Oak Harbor Youth Sailing Foundation this summer at the Oak Harbor Marina.

Participants, ages 9 and older, will learn how to sail on El Toro sailboats.

They will learn the basics of rigging the boat, steering techniques, sailing rules, sail trim, racing rules, and boating safety.

The cost of each session is $75 and $12 for the sailing textbook which can be purchased at the first class session.

The next sailing camp and will be held June 23 through June 28 and another will be held July 12, 13, 19, 20, Aug. 2 and 3.

Registration is on a first-come, first-served basis and can be completed by sending a check to OHYS, PO Box 2876, Oak Harbor, WA 98277.

NRA foundation dinner, auction

Members of the South Whidbey Friends of NRA Foundation Committee invite the public to attend its third annual dinner and auction on June 28 at 5 p.m. at the Holmes Harbor Rod and Gun Club near Langley.

Advance tickets are $30 each but are limited to the first 150 guests. Dinner tickets sell out quickly and are not available at the door.

Last year’s event raised $36,000.

Proceeds benefit firearms and hunter safety programs as well as educational events, wildlife conservation and marksmanship training.

The evening’s activities include a choice of prime rib or chicken dinner, raffles, various games, and both a silent and live auction.

Donated funds return to the local community through the nonprofit foundation, with a portion targeted this year to support the local club’s “trap shack.”

Tesoro fun run June 28

Recreational and competitive runners of all ages are encouraged to mark their calendars for the 14th annual Tesoro March Point Fun Run, scheduled Saturday, June 28, in Anacortes.

This running event attracts a variety of participants from fun-seeking families to serious 5K and 10K competitors. Leading off the morning of activities is a free, half-mile run for kids at 10 a.m. sharp.

Runners in the 5K and 10K start their races at 10:15 a.m.

There is a free lunch for participants. In addition, there are ribbons and prizes, plus trophies for 1st, 2nd and 3rd place finishers in all races and every age group (eight age groups in the 5K and 10K races).

Pre-registration race fees are $5 postmarked on or before Sunday, June 22, and $10 after that date. Commemorative T-shirts are $8 before June 22, $10 after.

The run begins on the grounds of the refinery at the north tip of March Point in Anacortes. It then takes runners to a beautiful bayside route on March Point Road, across the Point and back to the refinery.

To reach the Tesoro refinery from I-5, turn off at Exit 230. From Burlington head west on Highway 20 toward Anacortes. Turn right at the stoplight on March Point Road, opposite Similk Beach Golf Course. Follow signs to the refinery.

VFW golf tourney July 19

The 14th annual VFW Post 7392 Scholarship golf tournament will be held at the Gallery Golf Course Saturday, July 19.

The event kicks off with a shotgun start at 8:30 a.m.

Everyone is invited to come out and enjoy an 18-hole round of golf and then head off for the V-Dome at the VFW Post at 3037 N. Goldie Road for a real summer-time picnic.

At the picnic, golfers eat for free and their guests can join in the for just $5.

Entry fee for the golf tournament is $50 per person and includes green fees.

All proceeds benefit the VFW Post 7392 Scholarship fund.

There will be prizes, KP’s on all par 3 holes, longest drive on hole No. 2 and a Chipping Pot at the V-Dome.

The tournament format is Modified-Peoria Handicap six Blind Holes.

Hobie Cats race at marina

Hobie Class Association of North American is hosting a Hobie Catamaran area championship July 19 and 20.

This is one of only five such events that takes place in North America every year.

Racing will take place out of Penn Cove and the event will run from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. both days.

The Hobie Cats will be located in the city park in Oak Harbor prior to and after the races for viewing by the public.

Sign up for summer hoops

Oak Harbor High School girls basketball coach Brett McLeod, his coaching staff and players invite all girls in grades second through eighth to attend a summer basketball camp at the high school Monday through Thursday, July 28 to 31.

This is a chance to come out and work on your basketball skills under the guidance of the Wildcats’ coaches and players.

The cost of the camp is $55 per player and includes a T-shirt and a water bottle.

McLeod said the registration deadline for the camp has been extended to July 1.

Basketball camp at OHHS

Coach Mike Washington, Oak Harbor High School head boys’ varsity basketball coach, and Justin Ronning, Oak Harbor High school boys’ assistant coach, will conduct a summer basketball camp June 23 through June 25 from noon to 2 p.m. at the Oak Harbor High School gym.

The camp is for players entering fourth through ninth grades.

The cost of the camp is $45 per player and all you’ll need are basketball shoes, a basketball and a good attitude.
