The Board of Island County Commissioners in late December voted itself a $300-per-month stipend for each commissioner, to cover the cost of using their cars for in-county travel in 2016. The commissioners donated their stipends in 2009 and 2010 in response to the county’s financial challenges, they said. The stipend has ranged from $192 per month in 1982 to $800 per month in 2007.
