The Coupeville High School tennis team won the top two singles matches, but Klahowya swept the doubles competition on the way to a 5-2 win in Silverdale Thursday, Sept. 18.
Aaron Curtin, in No. 1 singles, and Sebastian Davis, in No. 2, picked up the wins for the Wolves in their first ever Olympic League match.
The Coupeville doubles teams, all first-year varsity players, struggled against the veteran Klahowya teams, according to coach Ken Stange.
Curtin won 6-0, 6-3 behind a powerful serve.
“When he has both (first and second serves) clicking, it’s fairly demoralizing because it is impossible to break his serve,” Stange said.
Davis’ off-season work is paying off, Stange said, and he “kept his opponent behind the baseline, placing balls deep in the court and using plenty of topspin” for a 6-2, 6-0 win.
Jimmy Myers, subbing for an ill Kyle Bodamer, made his varsity debut and fell in third singles (6-2, 3-6, 10-5) in “the most exciting match of the day,” Stange said.
“Although mathematically impossible, I believe Jimmy actually gave 120 percent today,” Stange said. “I couldn’t be more thrilled with his effort and performance.”
Doubles results: 1, Connor McCormick/Loren Nelson lost 6-2, 6-0; 2, John McClarin/Joseph Wedekind lost 6-1, 6-4; 3, Jared Helmstadter/Grey Rische lost 6-0, 6-1; 4, William Nelson/Joey Lippo lost 6-2, 6-0.
In JV action, Alex Schmakeit/Jeremiah Pace won 7-5.
The Wolves (0-2) entertain Archbishop Murphy at 3:30 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 24.
