In a sea of pink, the Coupeville High School volleyball team edged visiting Sultan 3-2 Thursday, Oct. 11.

Coupeville won the back-and-forth match 25-21, 19-25, 25-22, 15-25, 15-10.

The Wolves, donning pink uniforms, sponsored their annual Dig Pink Night in honor of breast cancer awareness. They were joined by pink-wearing fans and cheerleaders with pink pompoms.

Inspired by the supportive crowd and the thoughts of a Coupeville administrator and a player’s parent who are breast cancer survivors, the Wolves captured game one.

Game two, however, didn’t go smoothly as Coupeville fell well behind before rallying late.

The Wolves recovered to take game three, but the Turks (1-10, 2-10) answered with an easy win in the fourth set.

This set up Coupeville’s first five-game match of the season, and coach Toni Crebbin said she hoped her team “wouldn’t run out of gas.”

The tank was far from dry as the Wolves raced out to an early lead and cruised to the win.

Crebbin said, “The crowd was great. It drove the girls; there was a lot of enthusiasm.”

Megan Oakes finished with 36 assists and four aces; Hailey Hammer had 16 kills and two blocks; Bree Messner collected seven kills and two aces; and Bessie Walstad had six kills and two blocks.

Crebbin said Hammer, Walstad and Allie Hanigan got their hands on numerous Sultan shots to stymie the Turk attack.

Coupeville (2-9, 3-9) goes to Everett to face Archbishop Murphy (6-5, 6-6) at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 16.
