Maribeth Crandell (Letters, June 24) seems to have adopted scare tactics by quoting the Farm to Consumer Web site as an authority on HR 2749: the Food Safety act of 2009. This Web site and a couple of others I surfed to are supported by those less government regulation conservatives; we know the results of less government regulation.
HR 2749 is amending the Food and Cosmetic Act and provides enhanced abilities to track contaminated food and when they are discovered, to be able to locate the end users to gain information and provide assistance where needed. There are fines imposed for violators, up to $10,000 for a small firm and $3.7 million for a large corporation.
It is also to keep tabs on the foreign corporations doing business in the U.S. Remember the lead and melamine in products from China? The FDA has not been able to enforce these laws adequately due to their removal during the Bush years. This act is not only returning a higher level of scrutiny to the FDA and transferring the responsibility to the department of Health and Human Services.
Misinformation and half truths that sound as if they have substance but become just what they are when researched: Garbage.
